Sylvia Plath was a poet, author and ultimately tragic figure of American 20th century literature. In The Bell Jar, published in 1962 but written some years earlier, she tells the story of a talented young woman moving to New York for an internship at a magazine. This is not, though, the tale of a glamorous new life in the city. Instead it is one of personal struggle that draws heavily on Plath's own experience.
